Song of the Week 5/30/12

Soo I haven't listened to any new music at all really lately. Just old shit that's new to me. I also haven't posted a song in forever so I figured I'd go ahead and post this Wreckless Eric song that I keep listening to. It's not even on spotify which is soooooo annoying. Instead I've just listened to this silly You Tube video. I guess I could actually buy the song. Meh. Well anyway. You've probably heard it but it's worth another listen. I've listened to it about 20 times this week.

I planned your weekend for you. Pack your sunscreen 5/25-5/28

Friday: Urgh! A Music War Screening. Nervous Curtains and Peopleodian show at Texas Theatre

Texas Theatre is showing "Urgh! A Music War" and Omg you guys this documentary sounds so effing cool. Concert footage from 1980 of a bunch of different bands: Devo, X, Echo and the Bunnymen, The Dead Kennedys, Oingo Boingo. I could keep going those but just look at the IMDB cast list it's cray. Afterwards Nervous Curtains and Peoplodian play who are both great.

The movie includes performances by The Police. Heyy young Sting.

 Saturday: Homegrown Fest

Hells yea Homegrown is here! Homegrown music festival takes place at this pretty sweet park in downtown Dallas, Main Street Garden Park. It's an all day festival starting at 11:30. The line-up includes some pretty big names like Hayes Carll, Octopus Project, Centro-matic and Ben Kweller. Two bands I like a lot that are playing are Ume and Girl in a Coma probably mainly because they are girl fronted groups. By the time you read this tickets will be 25 dollars, but 15 bands are playing so that's like $1.67 per band.

Saturday Night: After Homegrown show at La Grange with Burning Hotels and a Mystery Guest oooooh

After the show it's the after party (can I get a toot toot). If 9 hours of rocking and day drinking hasn't left you a sunburned, dehydrated mess ( I said pack your sunscreen didn't I ) you should head to La Grange to see Burning Hotels because, as I've said a zillion times, they are awesome. Plus this whole mystery guest business is intriguing.  Only 8 bucks if you have a homegrown wristband.

Sunday: Float: DFW Concert Series at Lake Lewisville

This time you can bring the whole fam (well actually you can bring the whole fam to homegrown too but here they will have more stuff to do) out to the lake to swim and stuff and see some pretty sweet bands: The O's, Grant Jones and the Pistol Grip Lassos, Michael Donner and the Southern Renaissance, Wayne Hancock, James Macmurtry, and Ray Wylie Hubbard. This is the first of the series. There will also be shows 4th of July weekend and Labor Day weekend. I'm excited to see what else is in store.

Again! Bring  Sunscreen! Also, don't put your kid in a tanning bed.

Monday:Penguin Prison, Class Actress, and Datahowler at Club Dada

Ok I don't know anything about Penguin Prison but Class Actress was pretty rad at 35 Denton and Datahowler is one my favoritedudes so this should be a pretty fun show. Plus it's on Monday so what else are doing? TV's all reruns right now anyway.

What Polyphonic means to me: Polyphonic Spree at Lola's

So I'm two songs into the Polyphonic Spree show at Lola's and I can't stop crying. It's not like a Terms of Endearment level cry but a constant welling up. This actually isn't the first time I've cried at a Spree show.

I've seen the Polyphonic play since probably their third show ever. We even drove to Austin once to see them open for Granddaddy.  The Beginning Stages was my summer anthem the year it came out. This was also the summer I was getting ready to move to Portland. I would ride in my friend Trish's mustang and "I'm ON MY WAYYYYY" would blare out to the streets and Candice would tap me on the shoulder from the back seat and say "That's you. You're on your way". Not just in the literal sense. I was supposedly on my way to a bigger and better life in Portland. Soon after the Polyphonic Spree started moving on to bigger and better themselves. They toured through Portland a few times and I would be so pumped to see my friends and hear my songs from my home. Interestingly once I moved to Portland I rarely went to shows but if a Dallas band came through I was hell bent on getting there.

Then Polyphonic toured with Bowie. I stood in line behind Zia from The Dandy Warhols (who I frigging love and I almost peed my pants with excitement but I of course played it cool in line) to get my tickets. Once I was in my seat emotion hit me like a ton of bricks. My Polyphonic was opening for David freaking Bowie. That day I cried Terms of Endearment style.  I felt like I was on that stage with them and I felt like they represented everything I loved about Texas. The good things or at least the showmanship of the good things.

So here I was back at Lola's and the feeling hits me again. Lola's is incredibly packed on the stage and in the crowd. My day started in emotional anticipation because some of my friends are experiencing their performance for the first time and I just wanted to be them experiencing it for the first time. it seems so obvious to say it's a spiritual experience since the band wears choir robes but it's beyond that. It fills you up. All these songs about love and happiness and Tim with his radiant smile involving the crowd in every song with his sweet voice. There's so many different instruments playing you can't even focus sometimes, but when I do I'm just so happy. It fills me up and I feel like I should be floating I'm so full of happiness and we all should be floating and the band will just stay on the stage and we'll watch them from the ceiling. On some songs I'm jumping up and down with excitement so hard it's like I'm trying to get up there. So I'm jumping but still crying.

I cry for the same reasons as at David Bowie concert but this time it's from a place of history. I've been watching this band for ten years. TEN. I've grown up. they've grown up. One of the members I know isn't there because she, like me, has two kids at home and somebody had to stay with them. All the people who were in the band that I knew really well are gone and I miss those people dearly, but somehow it still feels exactly the same as it did back then. We've made it through the ups and downs of living and performing/ watching performances in Dallas. There are bands that have come and gone. Remnants of the past in Dallas of a different time. There are new fantastic bands and a new fresh start but the Polyphonic Spree is my constant. Tim Delaughter is my constant. With Tim comes the history of Dallas and my life there and the first time I heard Tripping Daisy playing live on the Adventure Club in my tiny little room in Cleburne and Tim kept referring to girls as doves and I thought it was the most adorable thing I 'd ever heard. Tripping Daisy was an incredible band and after the sadness of how they ended Polyphonic came and it's not the same. I can't compare the two really. That's like asking a mom who her favorite children are but Polyphonic helped me at least heal part of that sadness. So I cry remembering all of that.

I cry when they sing "It's the Sun," because that was my Portland song and in some sense Portland wasn't all I had hoped but in another sense going there led me back to here and loving being in Fort Worth and my current life and made me appreciate what I missed most when I lived in Portland. I cry because I missed the first two songs. I cry because Tim mentions MCA and oh hell no do not talk to me about MCA right now. My friends are holding my hand like I have mental problems or maybe just because we remember that we love each other. By this point Tim is hanging halfway off the stage over the crowd and he does a call and response with the crowd singing and the band and choir slowly leave the stage. It's just us and Tim and me and I've stopped crying but I'm still happy.

Top Five Places to go this Weekend 5/19-5/21

So Ima just give you guys some of the best pics of what to do this week because that's what I have time for.

Friday on the Green

Last week I told you to go to Friday on the Green but it was postponed because of rain and ish so Hey Guys you totes go to Friday on the Green this week with Hannah Barbarians, Quaker City Night Hawks and the Will Callers. Chill on the lawn with some Rahr beers and watch 80 kids begin a new generation of music love.

And if you need to bring a lamp ( like this lady did) then go for it

Arts Goggle

Saturday from 4-10 head back to Near Southside for Arts Goggle. ( btw Near Southside is sort of lame name. Where is it. Oh it's Near Southside. It's not actually Southside though it's just close oh and btw a shit ton of stuff goes on there so you might have to repeatedly say Near Southside. The area is the best though I'm not dissing that. Point being Ima start referring to it as Little Portland and you guys will know what I'm talking about ok. Glad we had this talk)  So I've actually never managed to make it to Arts Goggle but from what I know it's a big huge mish mash of most of the businesses in Little Portland being open and local Artists selling crafts and art. It's like Main Street Arts festival but cooler and more affordable. Btdub attending the event is free. A bunch of local bands are playing at various locations.

The program for Arts Goggle is kind of um well full so let me just list out who's playing and where:

One of the artist at Avoca is my buddy Sarah Zamora so someone tell her I said hey and then buy her stuff because she is awesome.

The Soft opening of Live Oak studios will be during Arts Goggle with Calhoun playing at 6 and Seryn playing at 8. Live Oak's opening is kind of a big deal. If you missed the big article about music in Fort Worth in FWWeekly you should read it here because there are more deets about what should become of Live Oak etc.

Dallas Comicon

Before Art Goggle or on Sunday Comicon Dallas is going down. Almost as exciting as Frightmare weekend. Ok FINNNE it's just as exciting because you can meet FREAKING STAN LEE!!! and Summer Glau ( from Firefly) and Patrick Stewart and the dudes who played Chewbacca and Boba Fett and obviously a bunch of comic book peoples. Plus the people watching alone would be fun. That runs Saturday and Sunday starting at 11 and it's only around 20 bucks. Scoreee.

Stan Lee and Cassandra Peterson (aka Elvira) via Elvira's FB page

All I can think about when I envision nerdy dudes meeting Summer Glau is this scene in Big Bang Theory

Hands On Art Body

Saturday night Fort Worth Art collective Homecoming Committee is gracing Dallas with it's presence at Oliver Francis Gallery. Hands on Art Body is actually an art acquisition competition where whoever is the last one standing touching an art piece gets to keep the that piece. Even if you don't want any of the pieces it should be quite entertaining to watch. This Glasstire write up gives all the details and talks about homecoming's upcoming events and where the title came from. Red bull is one of the event sponsors so be prepared to party into the wee hours.

Rubber Gloves Rehearsal Studio 15 Year Anniversary Party

At 35 Denton I went to Rubber Gloves for the first time in probably twelve years. When I was a wee little rocker in 1999 it was this tiny little place where you had to walk around back to get to one of the scuzziest bathrooms ever. The only shows I specifically remember were Cat Power and Molly Mcguire but I'm sure I saw many more. Now it actually has a bar, the bathrooms are inside, and it still hosts some great bands. It was the place to be for the last night of 35 Denton when Peaking Lights played.

This weekend they celebrate their 15 year anniversary with a jam packed line-up starting at 5:30 and it's free (for 21 and up it looks like 5 bucks for under). Here's the line-up yo. It's pretty damn good.

12:15-1:00 Slobberbone
11:30-12:00 C.S. Flemmons ( Baptist Generals)
10:45-11:15 Dove Hunter
10:00-10:30 Pinkish Black
9:15-9:45 Year of the Bear
8:30-9:00 Occult Detective Club
7:45-8:15 Akkolyte
7:00-7:30 Code Talker
6:15-6:45 Bad Design
5:30-6:00 Banos Y Banos

Pinkish Black just put out an album that is supposedly pretty spectacular so they should definitely be worth seeing.

Alright Homies Thanks for reading!

Take Your Mom to see some Rock and Roll this week! 5/9-5/15

Who's ready to hear about some motha flipping festivities!!!!!

Ok actually this weeks  haps are predominately Music oriented.

Tonight starts off with a bang in Dallas or Fort Worth. Almost everyone and their mom is going to see Polyphonic Spree at Lola's. My hunch is most people just want to solve the mystery of how all 20+ memebers of Polyphonic are going to fit on that stage.  Even Quiet Company was stretched to the five corners of the thing just to give Taylor room and there are only five of them. Polyphonic shows are usually a magical event so definitely go to there.

I don't know who designed this poster but it is teh rad
Meanwhile in Dallas Tennis is playing at Dada which I referenced in my song of the week yesterday. Local act Bethan is opening which seems like the perfect fit.

This is the Dada link. Ima refer to shows at Dada for two more times so come back here for that ( copying and pasting all three times would actually have taken less time than typing this but I digress.) Here is a review of their show in Austin last night to give you an idea. It also includes a pretty awesome rant about cell phone picture taking etiquette.

Thursday in FW Backlot films is hosting a free screening of Spaceballs off of Foch Street.

Friday on the Green's second concert for the year is this week with The Hannah Barbarians, Quaker City Night Hawks, and the Will Callers. I was able to go to the one in April and enjoyed it quite a bit although it seemed the biggest advantage of the event is for parents because you get to let your kids run amok in general safety. I have kids so I'm pumped for this week.

After that The QCNH boys move on to Magnolia Motor Lounge for a live CD release party with Oil Boom and J Charles and the Trainrobbers. For only 10 bucks you get into the show and get a copy of the CD. ( or you can buy it at Friday on the Green for $5.)

Or you can get your metal fix at Lola's with Garuda and a bunch of other bands that I'm assuming are also metal but might not be. Man I sound like I know what I'm talking about don't I? Rock!

In Dallas at Dada Datahowler (omg alliteration!) and  Burning Hotels open for Memoryhouse. Memoryhouse is pretty rad. Here's a video.

During the day on Saturday there is a big beerfest in Irving. So ya know beers and stuff. I feel like there is constantly either a food truck fest or a beer fest going on somewhere around here so I'm kind of over it at this point but I also always work Saturdays so maybe I'm just jelly.

That night in Fort Worth Madras, Great American Novel and Cleanup play the Cellar for free.

A bunch of Austin bands are playing the Wherehouse. ( I'm really running out of time at this point so that's all the info you get on that event.)

In Dallas also at Dada (Jesus H everything interesting is going on at Dada this week) you should go to The Ultra Violet Rock show which raises funds for research of Cystic Fibrosis. Several bands are playing starting at 7 with James Porter followed by Ryan Thomas Becker,The Oxen, Salim Nourallah & The Travolta's and Disposable Music.

On Sunday from 10am to 4pm there is a bike festival at Gateway park where Rahr Brewery and Fred's cafe will provide the noms. The event page says live music but I couldn't find a name for any bands :/.

That's all I have for this week ( which is plenty so geez stop pressuring me.) There were a few events that were supposed to be Mother's Day oriented but they all sounded so BORING!!!!!! Last year Lolaspalooza was happening and this year it's all seeing opera's and crap. I'm just going to ignore this being Mother's day and celebrate May 26th  by going to Homegrown. As for you well take your mom to see The Avengers or something ( Hey Mom if you're reading this let's make this happen ay) it will be much more fun than get brunch at some busy restaurant. Oh or Spiritualized at Granada Theatre on the 15th. Whoa.

P.S. If you signed up for the mailing list last week pleases sign up again. With the name change went all those sign ups :(. If you didn't sign up before: Hey you should sign up for the mailing list!

Milkshake changes

So I've officially changed my name for the purposes of informing people who haven't always known about my blog what my blog is about. So here she is. If you are receiving this via e-mail my previous e-mail (song of the week) won't work because my address change but you can find it over there on the side. Also, the site address is easier to remember now dfwmf.blogspot.com. Cool right. Thanks for reading guys. Here's a gift sneak peek of upcoming festivities for the week for dealing with things getting wonky.

My Favorite Song of all time right now 5/8

Tennis is playing Club Dada this week so even though I probably can't go I've been listening to their latest album most of the week. If you haven't heard them they are similar to Best Coast and She & Him but better. This song "Robin" really stood out for me because it's so dreamy and sweet. I imagine all those hipster Disney princess meme's sit around listening to this all day.

You can also hear the song on my spotify playlist of my fave songs of the year so far (hola como esta).

It's the Geeking Weekend 5/3- 5/7

It's Avengers weekend , it's Avengers weekend, it's Avengers weekend ( I hope you can picture me sitting at my desk dancing to this tune btw). So yea The Avengers comes out this weekend. No this isn't a local event per say but this is my milkshake and I can talk about what I want to.

I happened to get to see a sneak preview and it was amazeballs. I'm not techinically allowed to give a "review" but I will say you will enjoy it but only if you like things like: Action, Joss Whedon, Laughing, Samuel L. Jackson,  guys with bows and arrows, guys who look like this

I mean with the and the and the mmmmmm sigh
 or this

especially if you're a girl and you have a pulse unless of course you're not into dudes really then ummm hello Scarlett Johansson. Speaking of Scarlett Johannson she actually does a decent job of acting in this one as opposed to her completely flat performance in Iron Man 2. It was super weird seeing Colbie Smulders not playing Robin in HIMYM but props to her for making the big bucks now. My only complaint is that it was  3D and I freaking hate 3D. It's super cool feeling like I can touch the stair case or having bullets fly at my face but then a serious part with only conversation comes and you're like wait why are they in the dark oh I'm wearing effing sunglasses in a movie theater. Smooth. So try to see it not 3D. Other than that I would go see it again in the theaters at least twice if not more and I generally hate watching a movie more than once and especially rarely go to the theater.

As far as your best places to go I would go to the midnight screenings on Thursday (In FW we always go to the Rave in Ridgmar to be specific) because the real die hard nerdy fans come out at that time (sometimes in costume). Also Texas Theatre is showing it which should be a blast because that place was basically built by geeks and they have alcohol. Right before I posted this the Observer posted this article about why Texas Theatre would be showing such a mainstream movie. ( I didn't even question it ha!)

In other epic geek news it's Texas Frightmare Weekend!!! It's like comicon but all horror movie/ TV Show people. It's only 75 bucks for the whole weekend or 30 bucks a day. There are several movie screenings including Abraham Lincoln vs. Zombies and a guest list which includes a ton of people I would squee over seeing. It's like a dream Dancing with the Stars cast where I would vote for everyone.

For instance:
  • Flipping Traci Lords
  • Anthony Michael Hall
  • Freaking Michael Biehn!!!!!
  • Clint Howard ( Ron Howard creepy looking brother that has been in  a million moves)
  • Danielle Harris (ok I actually didn't know she was in any horror movies I just know her as the slutty neighbor on Roseanne which still is awesome to me)
  • Michael Madsen
  • Lisa Marie ( as in ex of Tim Burton not Presley)
  • A good chunk of the cast from "They Live"
    •  including Rowdy Roddy Piper
    • The ass to ass guy from Requiem for a Dream ( or if you want a less disturbing reference the guy who does the voice over for the pillow/ blanket fort episode of Community. Ok now I've connected the two for you which might be more disturbing uhh sorry)
    • and that creepy lady with the blue eyes who played Cagney in the first two episodes of Cagney and Lacey. BTW  best scene from "They Live":
  • A huge chunk of the cast of Carrie which is one of my all time favorite movies and I would probably flip out meeting such as
    • Piper Laurie (OMG I love her so much my Twitter profile is me impersonating her)
    • Bettie Buckley
    • Nancy Allen (The other popular chick in the movie that didn't eventually marry Steven Spielberg)
    • That chick who wears a baseball cap even at prom
The most relevant/ exciting guests are some of the cast of The Walking Dead most importantly Daryl and T-Dog ( maybe you can ask him what he did for most of the season). I would literally just pay the 30 bucks to meet Daryl because he is the best part of The Walking Dead.

Wellll that's about it- oh wait no there's more stuff to do this weekend.

Mayfest is going on all weekend in Fort Worth if you need some family friendly activities: games, face painting, several local bands, food and schtuff.

The Dallas Etsy spring bash is Saturday if you want to go buy something with a bird on it.

My peeps Tiffany Wolf and Christine Bisetto have another show at 500X this time the subject is Crushes and for the opening they encourage you to bust out your old bridesmaids dresses and sachay in.

Are you ready to partayyyy?

I love that movie so much.

As far as local music goes there are several shows as usual my picks are (Ima do some bullet point again bc hey once you get me started on bullet points I can't stop y'all)
  • In Fort Worth:
    • Thursday The Synaptic presents is back at Lola's with Driffield, The Skeeves, and Slumberbuzz
    • Friday Mills &Co. at the Grotto. Taylor Craig Mills (new album has received a lot of positive local press lately. )
    • Also on Friday at Lola's a blast from the local Texas scene past Bobgoblin is playing.

    •   For Cinco De Mayo there is a big celebration at the Wherehouse with Cleanup, My Wooden Leg, Mobley ( who I've blabbered on about a lot if you read this blog regularly), and Telegraph Canyon
    • Whiskey Folk Ramblers at Chat Room
  • In Dallas:
    • Bobgoblin starts out here on Thursday at La Grange
    • The Knux who apparently put on a pretty entertaining show are playing House of Blues ( it's only ten bucks though)
    • Probably the biggest most likely to be attended by evvvverybody show is Sarah Jaffe at the Granada. Her new album came out last week and is fanfrickingtastic. It's already gained national attention. Here's the latest video. Also former Ishi member Taylor Rhea's new band Zhora is opening which should so be fab!

    • Finally you can get in the way back machine and see The Melvins at Trees on Monday

So yea have a good weekend y'all.
